Ten Thousand Villages is now Dunia Marketplace

CHANGES IN HYDE PARK
TEN THOUSAND VILLAGES IS NOW DUNIA MARKETPLACE

For Immediate Release:

September 11, 2009: Ten Thousand Villages in Hyde Park is now Dunia Marketplace. Still a non-profit import store offering fairly traded handcrafted items and consumables from around the world, Dunia Marketplace is now a wholly local non-profit store and organization. Dunia Marketplace continues the store’s long-standing commitment to bringing jobs, dignity, education, sustainability and hope to villages and communities in developing countries. In regards to the decision to become a local fair trade store, Becky West, the new Store Director, says, “It is really important to be able to represent local Idaho groups in our store. While we have always provided local job training and educational opportunities, we are pleased to offer handmade goods from local non-profit groups such as Jaguar Moon, Sustainable Futures, area Native American groups, and local refugee groups while offering a place to tell their story as well.” Becky adds, “We would like Dunia Marketplace to become a destination and offer further educational programs, world music and dance events, and community shopping events we also seek to increase our volunteer presence at the store.”

Becky West took the reins as store director in June. After years of living on each coast, Becky and her son Ben returned to their friends and family and Boise. Possessing years of marketing, retail, event, and non-profit experience qualified her for the position of Store Director when it was vacated by Anna Wulfsong Belt last May. According to Emily Boles, Dunia Marketplace Board chairperson, “Our Store Director Search Committee sought out a candidate with retail experience and a strong sense of the store’s mission of telling artisans’ stories through the retail sale of their crafts. We had a long list of ‘wants’ and ‘needs’ in a Store Director, and Becky fulfilled our highest expectations.”

Dunia Marketplace is excited to unveil their new logo and presence during the Hyde Park Street Fair (Sept. 18, 19, 20). Will Spearman, local artist and designer, created a tree with a representation of the world as its branches. Will said “Dunia, which is a beautiful word for ‘world’ and ‘life’ in multiple languages needed to be represented graphically.” Mr. Spearman has captured the word and essence of Dunia beautifully.

An active part of the North End and Boise business communities for thirteen years, Dunia Marketplace is located at 1609 N. 13th St. in Boise's Historic Hyde Park. Off street parking is available behind the store. Dunia Marketplace is non-profit and staffed primarily by volunteers.
